CARBONDALE — The body found in an early morning house fire in Carbondale has been identified as an SIU-C student.

Authorities report that around 4:50 a.m. today, the Carbondale Fire Department, along with the Murphysboro Fire Department and Carbondale police were called to a house fire in the 700 block of West Freeman Street. The home was engulfed in flames upon their arrival.

While searching inside the home, firefighters located the one victim. The identity of that victim is being withheld pending the notification of family.

That person’s identity is not being released at this time. It’s unclear if the victim perished because of the fire.

Carbondale Fire, Carbondale Police, and Illinois State Police are investigating.
