SIMS – Wayne County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Sims Thursday on a report of a large snake being partially run over by a train.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies located the snake in a ditch near the railroad track.

After consulting with a veterinarian about the snake’s injuries, deputies euthanized the snake on scene. It was 11 feet long.

Back in late May, the sheriff’s office learned about several abandoned pythons in a home on North Railroad Street in Sims.

The sheriff’s office responded, and with help from reptile handlers, captured two of three reported snakes.

At that time it was believed the remaining snake was also a python that was between 7 to 8 feet long. They thought the snake was still inside the home and warned residents that the snake may have managed to get outside.

It’s unknown if the snake deputies euthanized Thursday was the remaining snake.
