MT. VERNON, IL — A Mt. Vernon man died Saturday in a St. Louis area Hospital while attempting to recover from injuries he sustained in a crash late Thursday night.

21-year-old William Penrod III, while driving alone, was reported to have run off the roadway near Straw Road and into a ditch on the southbound side of Route 148. Fire Department officials say Penrod was trapped in his vehicle when they arrived on scene and had to pop open a back door to get him out.

Penrod was then taken to SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon before being airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital where he would succumb to his injuries.

A funeral visitation will be held Tuesday from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at West Side Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday at 10:00 am also at the church. Interment will follow at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Mount Vernon. Memorials may be made in William’s honor to the Penrod family in the care of William Penrod, Jr. The Hughey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
