WAYNE COUNTY — A chlorine leak scare near Mt. Erie early Thursday morning had hazardous materials officers responding from multiple agencies, including some in Jefferson and Marion counties.
Hazardous materials officers from the Salem, Centralia, and Mt. Vernon Fire Departments were called to assist Cisne firefighters when an alarm sounded indicating a problem with the chlorination system at a remote building on the Murphy Brown Hog Farm operation northeast of Mt. Erie.
Centralia City firefighters, who are part of the team, say two of the hazmat crew members put on protective suits to approach the building. When they got to the building they found no leak or problem. The silent alarm was turned off and the chlorine cylinders were shut off as a precaution.
