Update: The father of Lana Albert released a statement Wednesday night saying he and Lana’s mother approved of the plea agreement, calling the incident a tragic accident, and commenting that he did not want to be a part of ruining another young person’s life, even though his daughter was gone.
CLINTON COUNTY — A 26-year-old Damiansville man charged with the 2014 hit-and-run death of a 23-year-old Lana Albert of Odin has been sentenced to 180 days in jail, with credit for 2-days served, after he pleaded guilty today to the second and lesser count against him.
Jonathon Nast was charged with Class 1 felony failure to report an accident resulting in death and Class 4 felony obstruction of justice by destroying evidence. He pleaded guilty today to the Class 4 felony obstruction charge and the Class 1 felony charge was dismissed.
Albert was killed in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 8, 2014, her body found on the side of old Highway 50 on the west side of Breese.
Nast was arrested days later, after it was found he sold his truck to a Murphysboro scrap yard with the intent of having the vehicle crushed.
However, law enforcement recovered the vehicle, and say there was evidence indicating it had been involved in an accident with a pedestrian, consistent with the one that killed Albert.
Both Albert and Nast had been at Big Stix Sports Bar and Grill in Breese shortly before the fatal incident.
In addition to his jail sentence, Nast must also pay a $4,650.80 in fines, fees, including $155.80 in restitution, with his $2,500 bond was applied. He will also serve probation until March 2017, and must complete drug and alcohol testing and treatment. He apologized to Lana’s family.
The remainder of his jail sentence was stayed Until January 11, 2016, at which time he must turn himself in to the Clinton County Jail.
