MARION COUNTY — A 41- year-old Madison man was sentenced today in Marion County Court to 4-years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after he pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Robert Hefner, who had a prior conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm, agreed to plead guilty to the Class 2 felony, in exchange for a Class 3 felony charge of possessing less than 5 grams of methamphetamine and misdemeanor driving on a revoked license being dismissed.

Hefner was stopped in Mary driving the wrong way on Poplar Street. Officers testified that during the stop they saw Hefner reach under his seat, and when questioned about it he reportedly admitted having ICE, a more pure form of meth.

A search of the vehicle also revealed a rifle and a shotgun in a duffel bag in the back seat, and two handguns, one loaded and one unloaded in the trunk. Three boxes of ammunition were also found in the trunk and a baggie of cannabis was found in the search.

Hefner has remained in the Marion County Jail since his arrest, with bail set at $40,000.
