JEFFERSON COUNTY — Authorities are confirming one person is dead after an ultralight crash Tuesday just south of the Mt. Vernon Outland Airport.
The craft went down around 4 p.m. Tuesday in a bean field approximately 2 miles south of the Mt. Vernon Airport. The FAA is aware of the incident and the NTSB is en route to the scene to conduct an investigation.
The identity of the person killed in the crash is being withheld pending the notification of family. Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Joe Marks was dispatched to the scene.
Deputies will remain at the crash site until members of the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board arrive conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
A Carlyle man was killed in February when his experimental aircraft crashed into a field on Woods Lane just east of the Centralia Airport. Ray Brown crashed his gyrocpoter while attempting to make an emergency landing at the airport.
According to the FAA, the accident and injury rate for hang gliders, paragliders, and other ultralights is extremely high when compared to general aviation aircraft. They do not require an FAA Certificate or pilot’s license.
