JEFFERSON COUNTY — A Jefferson County jury trial scheduled next week for a 38-year-old Belle Rive man on multiple sex assault charges has been postponed, as the Attorney General’s office moves to have him declared sexually dangerous.

Rudy Byler was already on probation three counts Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse when he was arrested in April on three Class X counts predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under the age of 13; two counts Class 1 felony criminal sexual assault of a family member under the age of 18; and two counts Class 2 felony aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a family member — one under the age of 18 and one under the age of 13.

Byler was in court Tuesday for a pre-trial hearing before next week’s scheduled jury trial when the trial setting was vacated and the case reset for October 25 when the Illinois Attorney General’s Office will be assisting and will be filing a petition to have Byler committed as a sexually dangerous person.

Jefferson County Sheriff Travis Allen cautioned at the time of Byler’s April arrest that we turn dangerous people back on the streets, we create victims. Allen commented that the new charges against Byler should have never happened as he should have been in prison and not on the street.
