JEFFERSON COUNTY — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a new scam that is going around.
The county dispatch center received a report from a woman saying she received a text message from a friend of hers in her contact list.
The text message read that her friend won $100,000 and she was also on the winner list as well.
When she asked how to get the money she received text messages from someone named “Brenda” giving her directions on what to do.
Brenda asked for her name, address, date of birth, and her social security number. “Brenda” also stated the caller would receive a check by UPS and she would have to pay UPS $970.
The sheriff’s office reminds everyone that if someone is asking for your personal information it is probably a scam. The difference with this scam is they are sending text messages to you that may come up as a friend that is sending them.
Everyone is asked to please pass this information along to friends, family and to the elderly as it may confuse some people that they will get a text message from someone they know, but it is not actually the person they know.
