In addition to the armed habitual criminal charge, Joevon Taylor was formally charged Monday with Class 2 felony being a felon in possession of a firearm with a prior conviction, Class 3 felony possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, and Class 4 felony possession with the intent to deliver between 10 and 30 grams of cannabis.

He was arrested Saturday when a Mt. Vernon police officer attempted to stop Taylor for failure to obey a stop sign. Rather than pulling over, Taylor reportedly continued driving for several blocks before exiting the vehicle and running from the scene.

The officer began a lengthy foot pursuit of Taylor who reportedly discarded numerous items as he ran. The officer ultimately apprehended Taylor who was then taken into custody.

During an ensuing investigation officers reportedly located a loaded 9 mm handgun, currency, and cannabis.

Taylor was charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Possession of a Firearm with a Defaced Serial Number, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of Cannabis with Intent to Deliver, Resisting Arrest and Driving While License Suspended. He was also cited for Disobeying a Stop Sign, No Insurance and Illegal Transportation of Alcohol.

Taylor was taken to the Jefferson County Jail with bond to be set. Taylor is considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
