CLINTON COUNTY — Authorities have identified a 24-year-old Beckemeyer man as the driver killed Thursday morning in a crash with a Norfolk Southern train in Clinton County.
Spencer Crafton was reportedly driving to a friend’s house around 9:48 a.m. when just east of Hoffman the passenger side of his vehicle was struck by the two-person cargo train.
Crafton was airlifted from the scene and flown to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis where he was later pronounced dead.
Officials say they do not suspect drugs or alcohol played any role in the crash. The conductor of the train was reportedly shaken up but there were no other injuries reported.
The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Hoffman and Huey-Ferrin-Boulder fire departments, Lifestar ambulance and Air-Evac responded to the scene, which was a private lane at 24505 State Route 161.
The crash remains under investigation.
