JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 31-year-old Mt. Vernon man is in the Jefferson County Jail on charges stemming from a weekend shooting incident.
Jefferey Brown was arrested around 3:19 a.m. Saturday when Mt. Vernon police officers responded to the 1100 block of Westcott on a report of shots fired. No injuries were reported.
Following an investigation, detectives responding to the call arrested Brown for alleged reckless discharge of a firearm. A firearm and ammunition were reportedly seized at the time of the arrest.
Brown was transported to the Jefferson County Jail where he remains with bail set at $100,000.
Brown was convicted in 2004 of second-degree murder in connection with the 2003 shooting death of 23-year-old Micki Johns in the 1600 block of Forrest Street in Mt. Vernon.
Officers responding to a report of shots fired reportedly found the woman’s body near the intersection of Forrest and 17th streets
A sawed-off shotgun was reportedly found that the scene and was believed at that time to be the murder weapon. Brown was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Micki Johns.
He was first released on parole in 2012, but subsequently violated the terms of his release and was readmitted to the department of corrections where he was then released in 2014 after serving the remainder of his sentence.
