COLES COUNTY — A judge wants a psychiatrist to take a look at the student accused of pulling a gun and firing inside Mattoon High School.

The judge issued the order for a mental health exam yesterday. The suspect is being tried in juvenile court and won’t be identified. Police say the young man tried to shoot a young woman at the school Wednesday; he missed and hit a third student.

Mattoon school leaders are praising P.E. teacher Angie McQueen who they say grabbed the shooter’s arm and helped bring him to the ground. Parents in Mattoon say McQueen is a hero.
