CENTRALIA — The Office of the State Fire Marshal was called in reference to a fire that started around 6 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 1400 block of South Elm in Centralia.
Centralia City firefighters report that a suitcase was found burned in the corner of a room in the house that was supposed to be vacant.
Reports say the suitcase appeared to have been full of paper, despite claims by one person who had been at the home that his clothes had been inside. Firefighters did find the clothes underneath the burned suitcase, however.
The owner of the home lives in Edwardsville and reportedly told officials that no one had permission to be in the house. Several people did, however, acknowledge to authorities being in the home, even providing officials with their names.
No injuries were reported, and damage was limited to the suitcase and minor smoke damage in the home.
