JEFFERSON COUNTY — Authorities in Jefferson County have released more information into a shooting incident Wednesday that resulted in a 36-year-old man being charged with the first degree murder of his brother

At approximately 5:46 p.m. Wednesday, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a woman indicating her husband, later identified as 34-year-old David Sloan, of Mount Vernon, had been shot by his brother, Matthew Sloan, of rural Mount Vernon.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Litton’s Ambulance, and Jefferson Fire Protection District personnel responded to 9806 East Webb Road in rural Mount Vernon.

Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators of the Illinois State Police were called in to conduct an investigation.

Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse confirmed Thursday afternoon that David Sloan died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

As a result of the investigation, Matthew Sloan was arrested for homicide. He remains in the Jefferson County Jail with bail set at $3 million. He’s been charged with three counts first-degree murder and is scheduled for an August 1 preliminary hearing with a court appointed attorney.

The incident is being investigated by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County State’s Attorney, Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, and Illinois State Police.
