CHICAGO (AP) — A man has been charged with murder and attempted murder for fatally shooting another man on a sidewalk and then wounding an undercover police sergeant who followed him after witnessing the slaying.
Chicago police say 35-year-old Walter Johnson also is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated battery with a firearm for the Wednesday shootings.
Interim Police Superintendent Charlie Beck has said the sergeant and other officers observed the first shooting. The suspect then drove off and when noticed he was being followed, he got out the pickup and fired several shots at the sergeant before driving off.
