CHICAGO — Cases of COVID-19 in Illinois have jumped from 11 Monday to 19 Tuesday, with the first residents outside of Cook County testing positive at a public health department laboratory.

The cases include a Kane County woman in her 60s and a McHenry County teen, neither of whom had a history of travel to an affected area and no connection to a known case of COVID-19. Public health officials are identifying and contacting all close contacts.

Currently, there are 19 individuals in Illinois who have tested positive for COVID-19. At least one case acquired the virus in the community, but probably more.

These most recent cases are in isolation and are doing well.

The coronavirus testing lab in Carbondale is now open and testing between three and five specimen samples daily.

The samples come from throughout southern Illinois. The state’s three public health labs in Carbondale, Springfield and Chicago have tested about 620 specimens.

They have supplies to test about 2,000.

Results from the tests are generally available within 24 hours of receiving a specimen.

The Carbondale lab sits on Southern Illinois University campus.
