SALEM — The Salem Police Department announced Tuesday that it collected 115 pounds of unwanted, unused medications at the Drug Take Back program on Saturday.
Saturday’s total is the largest number of medications collected since October 2018 when 130 pounds were reported.
However, October 2013 tops the list for the amount of medications relinquished to the Salem Police Department with a whopping 263 pounds collected. To date, SPD has collected nearly 1,500 pounds of unwanted, expired medications.
The program is held twice a year but was canceled in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.
