SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois’ governor is stumping for a freeze on the state’s motor fuel tax to ease inflation pain less than a year after pushing a tourism plan that encouraged road trips when gas prices were similarly as high.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker says the tourism promotion was before the nation saw 7% inflation. Pritzker stopped at a Springfield supermarket Tuesday to promote his budget plan providing the gas-tax freeze, a suspension of the 1% sales tax on groceries and a rebate on property taxes of up to $300.

The cut in gas taxes has hit opposition from transportation advocates because it would take $135 million out of the road-building plan at a time when infrastructure is crumbling.
