JEFFERSON COUNTY — Jefferson County authorities are confirming human remains have been discovered just southwest of Mt. Vernon.
According to Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard, someone hunting for shed deer antlers found the remains around 5 p.m. Monday in an area near the intersection of Veterans Memorial Drive and Davidson Avenue, which is west of the Interstate 57/Veterans Memorial Drive interchange.
Mt. Vernon Police responded to the 911 call and found the remains just outside the Mt. Vernon city limits.
Bullard says it’s evident from the condition of the remains the person didn’t die recently. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office is currently working to locate a forensic anthropologist to hopefully learn more about the identity of the deceased, how they died and how long their remains have been where they were discovered.
Bullard says they have reviewed missing person reports, but at this point have not made any final determination on the identity of the remains.
