CENTRALIA — Centralia police have released more details surrounding the recent arrest of a 31-year-old Centralia man on charges that apparently started with a chicken strip dispute and ended 36 hours later with a machete.
According to Centralia police, the initial incidents took place in May and started with a disagreement between two employees at a Centralia restaurant over how many chicken strips should be served on a plate. Police say one of the workers; Celestino or “Tino” Santiago Garcia carried that disagreement to his girlfriend’s home and proceeded to tell her about the conflict.
In a text message that would set off a string of events, the girlfriend asked Tino’s coworker what had happened between them that day. When Tino found out about that message he reportedly became very angry with his girlfriend and began threatening her, causing her to then message Tino’s brother, 31-year-old Marcelino Santiago Garcia asking for his help calming down Tino.
A short time later, Marcelino reportedly showed up at the home with a machete, kicked in the door to the girlfriend’s home and instead began threatening to cut the girlfriend into pieces. The argument reportedly lasted for several hours before both Garcia brothers left.
The following day the girlfriend was working at another Centralia restaurant when Tino showed up telling her he was very upset because now his brother wanted to kill her. The two brothers then reportedly went to the girlfriend’s grandmother’s home, with Marcelino again carrying a machete and making threats. The brothers soon left and the grandmother called the police. But the Garcias weren’t done. They then reportedly went back to the first restaurant where Tino worked and threatened his coworker with the machete — over chicken strips.
The girlfriend was granted orders of protection against the brothers in May but neither man could be located until Friday when Marcelino was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail. He was charged Monday with felony intimidation and misdemeanor aggravated assault with a deadly weapon as well as carrying a knife with violent intent. His bail was set at $10,000.
He’s next scheduled to appear in court July 27 for a first appearance with his court-appointed attorney.
