Mount Vernon — Motorists should be aware that starting Tuesday, Illinois 142 or Veterans Memorial Drive in Mt. Vernon will be closed.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced the road closure will be at the Union Pacific crossing just west of Shawnee Street in Mount Vernon.

Crews from the Union Pacific Railroad will begin performing repairs on the railroad crossing on Illinois 142 at the south edge of Mount Vernon Tuesday and will complete them Wednesday.

There will be no traffic permitted through the Veterans Memorial Drive crossing during the repairs. Try to avoid the work area, when feasible use of the marked detour should be considered.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the Mount Vernon area, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
