MOUNT VERNON — Area veterans are invited out this weekend for food, fellowship and fun at a Mt. Vernon event in their honor.

The Third Annual Veteran’s Appreciation Picnic will be held from noon until 2 p.m. Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park.

There will be a special recognition ceremony for those who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and conflicts in Southwest Asia. Rollcall will be held for all 2022 deceased veterans.

In addition to the picnic, the First Robert Morgan Jr. Bags Tourney will be held at the park Sunday.

Sign-up starts at 11 a.m. with a $10 entry fee and competition begins at 2 p.m.

Brian Gibson served with Morgan and organized the tourney as a way to raise money for the family left behind when Morgan died from cancer.

This event is an opportunity for veterans to come together, share stories and support, as well as to make contact with veteran support organizations. Plus there will be free barbecue.

Veteran and one of the event’s organizers Donte Moore explains:

All Jefferson County residents who served in the military are invited, along with their family members for this free picnic.
