A 30-year-old Breese resident pleaded guilty Monday in Clinton County Court to second-degree murder in connection with the death last year of Marcos Chavez Xiloj.
Valentin Navarro-Lopez was initially charged with felony kidnapping and unlawful restraint, along with four counts of first-degree murder. The state later agreed to dismiss the kidnapping and unlawful restraint charges, and instead pursue four murder charges.
Then on Monday, the remaining charges were also dismissed after Navarro-Lopez entered into a plea agreement with the state on Count 7, which was the Class 1 felony second-degree murder charge.
Xiloj’s death was reportedly the result of a fight between the two men at Carlyle Lake. He was discovered face-down next to the lake, with his shoes and pants off. A large rock covered in blood was reportedly found next to the body.
Navarro-Lopez told detectives that Xiloj fell when throwing a rock at him. When Navarro-Lopez noticed Xiloj was bleeding profusely, he dragged him to the water to clean him.
Navarro-Lopez could be sentenced up to 20 years in prison when he’s sentenced October 30.
