WASHINGTON COUNTY — Bond was set at half a million dollars Wednesday in Washington County Court for a 29-year-old Nashville, Illinois man accused of stabbing a police officer in the neck.

Stanley Underwood was formally charged in court Wednesday with Class 2 felony aggravated battery of a peace officer, Class 3 felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and Class X felony attempted murder.

Underwood appeared in court via Zoom, where Judge Daniel Emge advised him of the charges against him, possible punishments, amount of bond and special conditions of bond.

Underwood was taken into custody Wednesday morning following a five-hour standoff with law enforcement at his apartment in the 200 block of South Hoffman Road in Nashville.

Two Nashville police officers had responded to the apartment on a report of a man going through a mental health crisis and when they determined Underwood needed to be placed in protective custody he allegedly produced a sharp weapon and stabbed one officer in the neck. He then barricaded himself in the bathroom.

Other area departments, including Centralia PD and a SWAT responded to the scene where a standoff began, lasting until 4 o’clock Wednesday morning.

Hoffman was taken into custody without injuries. The officer was transported to an area hospital by ambulance and is expected to recover. No other injuries were reported.

The jail reported having difficulty getting Underwood to cooperate with taking a mugshot, but say one will be made available when he does.

He’s next scheduled to appear August 31 for a preliminary hearing in the case and has advised the court he will attempt to hire a private attorney.
