MARION COUNTY — Multiple defendants pleaded guilty Tuesday in Marion County Court in separate and unrelated sex crimes cases.

Thirty-nine-year-old Zachary Boyer, of Centralia pleaded guilty to one of two Class X felonies accusing of predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under the age of 13 in exchange for one being dismissed.

Boyer was sentenced to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, three years to life mandatory supervised release, and was given credit for time served since his arrest in June.

Boyer’s arrest came after the Centralia Police Department was contacted by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services about a possible sexual assault case that occurred in Centralia.

CPD detectives, along with the Amy Center, interviewed the victim, and after an investigation, Boyer was arrested on three counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault victim under the age of 13.

In a separate and unrelated case, 37-year-old Courtney Buffkins, of St. Louis, Missouri, entered a partially negotiated plea.

Buffkins pleaded guilty to counts two, three, four, five, and 10, in exchange for counts one, six, seven, and nine being dismissed. Counts 11 through 16 remain pending.

He was facing more than a dozen felony charges that included seven Class 2 felony child pornography charges, three Class X felony charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault, Class X felony kidnapping, and Class 3 aggravated battery charges.

 

Buffkins pleaded guilty earlier this year to a misdemeanor charge in Marion County Court of obstructing identity in exchange for a felony charge being dismissed.

He also pleaded guilty last year to Class 4 felony criminal sexual abuse in Cumberland County, Illinois, and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Buffkins also facing felony charges in Coles County, Illinois, for Class 1 criminal sexual assault and two counts of Class 2 felony aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a juvenile victim 5 years or more younger than him.

Sentencing for this portion of the Buffkins case is set for January 2, 2024.

And 18-year-old Kaleb Nagy of Centralia pleaded guilty Monday to the lesser of two charges against him, in exchange for a three-year prison sentence.

Nagy was facing charges of Class X felony predatory criminal sexual assault and Class 1 felony criminal sexual assault by force.

The Class X charge was reduced to Class 4 felony criminal sexual abuse by force. He pleaded guilty to the Class 4 charge in exchange for the Class 1 being dismissed.

Centralia Police arrested Nagy in June after responding to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital where the victim reported a sexual assault that occurred in Foundation Park and identified Nagy. The two reportedly were coworkers at a Centralia business.
