SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A federal judge on Friday remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshal Service a former Illinois lawmaker and gubernatorial candidate who pleaded guilty Thursday to all counts against him in a federal corruption case.
William “Sam” McCann had asked to be released to home confinement while awaiting sentencing in June. That request was denied Friday and the former state Senator was ordered to be detained until his June 20 sentencing.
As the prosecution was finishing up its case against him Thursday, McCann abruptly pleaded guilty to nine counts of wire fraud, money laundering and tax evasion.
The seven counts of wire fraud and a single count of money laundering each carry a sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison.
