Authorities are reporting the body of the man alleged to have fled police Monday morning in Vandalia was discovered in a retention pond.

FAYETTE COUNTY — An operation continues near Vandalia to recover a man who reportedly was attempting to elude police Monday morning and jumped into a body of water.

According to reports, the man was involved in a pursuit that originated in Vandalia and continued out of the city limits where the man reportedly jumped into a retention pond near the Kaskaskia River.

Dive Rescue teams from Fayette and Effingham counties responded to the scene and a Clay County team equipped with sonar was also called in to assist.

Vandalia Police Department and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office were also on scene
