MOUNT VERNON — Just a little over a week after Mt. Vernon Police Chief Trent Page announced he’ll retire this month, Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Kevin Sargent has submitted his letter of retirement also effective this month.
Chief Sargent confirms his last day will be May 31st. He calls the decision a “bittersweet moment” and says it has been a wonderful career.
According to Sargent, he’s been in public service his entire working life, starting as a lifeguard and then becoming a paramedic with Litton Ambulance. He started with the Mt. Vernon Fire Department on June 1, 1996, and worked his way up through the ranks.
Saying he’s been blessed to work with everyone he’s worked with and to be able to help people in his community, noting he will always cherish this time.
According to Kendra Donoho, Executive Administrative Assistant for the City of Mt. Vernon, Chief Sargent will be greatly missed as will Police Chief Page.
Page announced last week that he’ll retire effective Friday, May 24. Both men were sworn into their respective leadership positions on the same day in August of 2018, after decades with their departments in various positions including as assistant chiefs.
Donoho says Assistant Fire Chief Chris Yenne will step in to fill Sargent’s vacancy until the City hires a permanent leader for the fire department. Chief Page confirmed last week that Assistant Chief Robert Brands will take over the top cop spot.
