SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois General Assembly has passed a bill honoring a fallen sheriff’s deputy from Southern Illinois.
House Joint Resolution 28 was adopted unanimously in both the House and Senate approving the naming of a section of Interstate 64 from Mile Post 112 to 116 in Wayne County as the Deputy Sean Riley Memorial Highway.
Deputy Riley was murdered in the line of duty on December 29, 2021, when responding to a call for a motorist assist in that area of the interstate.
He was a three-year veteran of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department where he served as both a corrections officer and patrol deputy. Deputy Riley left behind his wife Leslie and children Logan, Deegan, and Mia, along with his father Doug Riley, and a number of other close family members.
That section of the interstate will be marked with signage indicating its memorial name and designation.
