TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — An Illinois man who works as a county official in neighboring Indiana has been charged with two counts of voting outside his precinct of residence.

The (Terre Haute) Tribune-Star reports that 61-year-old Jerome Kessler was arrested Thursday in Vigo County Indiana after turning himself in to authorities.

Kesler is the county’s Emergency Management deputy planning director.

Indiana state police say the investigation started in October and that Kesler lives at an address in Paris, Illinois, but voted in Vigo County primary and general elections from 2010 to 2014.

Paris, Illinois, is just across the state line and northwest of Terre Haute.

Police say Kesler was released Thursday after posting bond. The charges are felonies.

The Associated Press left phone messages Thursday seeking comment from Kesler.
