FAYETTE COUNTY — Bail has been set at $750,000 for a 41-year-old California woman arrested following a traffic stop in Fayette County that reportedly revealed nearly 250 pounds of cannabis in the truck she was driving.
Michelle N. Vazquez was traveling on Interstate 70 last week when she was stopped by an Illinois State Trooper. After Vazquez gave ISP permission to search her truck Trooper Todd Ziegler reportedly discovered 240 pounds of cannabis with a street value estimated at $1.1 million.
Vazquez was formally charged Monday in Fayette County Court with Class X felonies for trafficking more than 5,000 grams of cannabis and delivery of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis, as well as Class 1 felony possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis.
According to the Fayette County State’s Attorney’s Office, Vazquez could be facing additional charges, as possible controlled substances were also found in the vehicle and have been sent to the state crime lab for testing.
Vazquez has hired a private attorney. She is next scheduled to appear in court October 11 for a preliminary hearing in the case. She remains in the Fayette County Jail.
