EFFINGHAM COUNTY — An 83-year-old Brownstown woman was one of two drivers killed Saturday night in a head-on crash between a car and semi on Interstate 57 between the two major Effingham exits.

Preliminary reports indicate a car driven by Shirley Klitzing, of Brownstown, was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of traffic when it crashed into a semi-truck driven by 68-year-old Richard Messerve of Mayer, Arizona.

The car was thrown around the semi, damaging the front end and driver’s side of the car. The semi overturned into the guardrail due to the crash.

Both drivers had to be extricated. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Messerve was pronounced dead at the scene, while Klitzing was flown to Carle Hospital in Champaign where she was pronounced deceased due to injuries.

The crash occurred at 10:28 Saturday night.
