SALINE COUNTY — Officials with the state’s Attorney General’s office will be watching over election proceedings Tuesday in Saline County, following complaints surrounding the county clerk’s process.

According to WSIL, investigators with the Illinois Attorney General’s office were called to the courthouse Monday after concerns about the openness and transparency of the election could be at risk.

Saline County State’s Attorney Jayson Clark told WSIL that he received multiple complaints Monday morning that County Clerk Kim Buchanan was not allowing poll watchers to oversee the processing of early voting results.

After initially addressing the issue himself, Clark said when he left yesterday that the poll watchers were again kicked out, and were accusing Buchanan of building a physical barricade between herself and the poll watchers.

That’s when Clark called in the Attorney General’s office.

WSIL reports those investigators made Buchanan remove the barricade and allow poll watchers to observe.

Buchanan declined comment after yesterday’s events. Clark says that officials with the Attorney General’s office will oversee the voting today to put any doubts surrounding the election to rest.

Buchanan, a Republican, was seeking reelection to her office but was defeated in the Primary Election.
