ILLINOIS — Democrats dominated the top of the ticket in Tuesday’s Illinois General Election with Gov. Bruce Rauner quickly conceding the race to J.B. Pritzker.
Treasurer Michael Frerichs, Comptroller Susana Mendoza, and Secretary of State Jesse White easily held their seats, while Kwame Raoul easily defeated Republican Erika Harold for the Attorney General’s office..
State and Congressional races in our listening area, however, easily went to GOP candidates, with the Republicans sweeping downstate races .
Republican Congressman John Shimkus defeated his Democratic opponent Kevin Gaither to once again retain his seat, while Mike Bost will retain his seat over Democrat Brenden Kelly
Jason Plummer received the nod over Democrat Brian Stout to take the State Senate seat being vacated by Kyle McCarter and Blaine Wilhour defeated Dave Seilers to replace the retiring John Cavaletto in House District 107.
Downstate efforts to go red, however, were defeated state-wide, with Democrats returning a super-majority to Speaker Mike Madigan in the House. Democrats also maintained their majority in the Senate.
Local offices also saw the Republicans sweep the ballot as the GOP took every office on the ticket in Marion County.
Republican Gary Purcell will replace retiring Democrat Patti Hahn as the county treasurer.
Republican Steven Bradley will replace outgoing Tabitha Meador to join the Marion County Board, Bill Henson defeated Democrat Robert Schnicker to retain his seat on the Board, and Debbie Smith beat Danny Stover to retain her Board seat.
In Jefferson County, Jeff Bullard defeated Democrat Clint Taylor to win the Sheriff’s seat by a 67 vote margin, and Republican Bob Watt defeated outgoing Sheriff Travis Allen for election to the Jefferson County Treasurer’s Office.
