MOUNT VERNON — The Illinois State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate a structure fire late Tuesday night in Mt. Vernon.

Mt. Vernon firefighters responded to a call from a neighbor reporting the fire around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at 12th and Wescott.

Upon their arrival, firefighters report flames were coming from the attic of the home. They were able to knock down the fire before it spread to the living area of the home. However, there was substantial heat and smoke damage.

Mt. Vernon Fire subsequently called in Jefferson Fire Protection, as well as Woodlawn and Waltonville fire protection districts for mutual aid.

No injuries were reported and all occupants were out of the home, but Red Cross has been called to assist the residents.

Firefighters were on scene for about two hours, but returned to the scene Wednesday morning to extinguish hot spots that had popped up.
