MADISON, Ill. (AP) — An overnight fire has swept a recycling business in southwestern Illinois, forcing the evacuation of nearby homes.
KSDK-TV reports that the fire at a Madison, Illinois, industrial park in the Metro-East area near St. Louis caused heavy damage early Wednesday at Interco, a recycling company that recycles metals, computers and electronics.
Firefighters from at least five departments, including the city of St. Louis, battled the fire, which began shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday.
Madison Mayor John Hamm says the fire was under control but four separate buildings had collapsed and officials were trying to track down the building’s owners.
