HARMON, Ill. (AP) — An Illinois Army veteran wounded in Afghanistan and his family will soon have a new home thanks to a group of volunteers.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports volunteers from the Abiding Word Church in Sterling expect to finish work on the three-bedroom home at the end of May. Construction started last summer in the northern Illinois town of Harmon.

Michael Shoemaker was hurt in 2012 when ammunition he and several other soldiers were carrying exploded. The 27-year-old Harmon man’s right arm and both legs were injured. Doctors also had to remove metal debris from his head.

Shoemaker and his wife 27-year-old wife, Brittany, have four children.

Volunteer Evan Moore says building the home is part of the church’s disaster relief ministry.
