MARION COUNTY — A 37-year-old St. Louis man accused of multiple crimes against a young Salem girl, including kidnapping, and sexual assault, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Marion County Court to misdemeanor obstructing justice in a separate but related case.
Courtney Buffkins is still scheduled to be tried by a jury in August on remaining charges of Class X felony kidnapping and aggravated criminal sexual assault, as well as Class 2 felony charges of aggravated criminal abuse, and Class 3 felony aggravated battery.
Buffkins was sentenced Wednesday to 364 days in jail with credit for time served and a felony count of obstruction was dismissed in exchange for his plea.
He reportedly gave Salem police a false name when they were investigating what was going on in his Salem motel room.
Buffkins is next scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on July 18 for a pretrial hearing on the remaining charges against him.
He remains in the Marion County Jail with bond set at $750,000.
