GALATIA, Ill. (AP) — A notice from an Illinois agency to a local workforce development board says the American Coal Co. has laid off 110 workers at its mine in Galatia.
An official with the Southern 14 Workforce Investment Board says the notice was sent to prompt unemployment services to those affected. The notice was sent from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity after receiving a WARN notice, which requires 60 days’ notice if large-scale layoffs are planned, from the company in June.
A message seeking comment from the mine’s parent company was left by the (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan. It’s unclear whether the layoffs will be permanent.
This is at least the second round of layoffs at the Galatia mine this year. American Coal laid off about 85 workers in May.
