MASSAC COUNTY — An 8-year-old child died in a single vehicle crash in Massac County Tuesday morning.

Illinois State Police say just after 11, a pickup truck, driven by a 16-year-old juvenile and occupied by four other juveniles, was going south on Mill Springs Road just north of Purcell Road when it lost control for an unknown reason.

The truck slid off the roadway, went down a steep embankment and came to rest in the bottom of a rocky creek bed.

The truck landed on its driver’s side. The driver was not ejected, however all four passenger were ejected, three of which were riding the bed of the truck.

The 8-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Everyone else were taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. No one was wearing a seat belt.
