CENTRALIA — A high-speed chase in Centralia early Monday morning resulted in the arrest of a 16-year-old male after he reportedly crashed a stolen van and led law enforcement on a brief manhunt.

According to Interim Centralia Police Chief Brian Atchison, just before 2 a.m. Monday, a patrol officer noticed a van pull out of an alley at a high rate of speed in the 500 block of East Broadway and as the van continued to gain speed going east on McCord Street the officer attempted to make a traffic stop.

Atchison says that by the time the van reached Airport Road on Route 161, speeds were clocked at nearly 100 miles per hour and the van continued east across Interstate 57 until losing control attempting to turn south on Old Salem Road.

At that point the van went airborne, careened about 100 feet down an embankment and crashed into a drainage ditch.

The juvenile then reportedly fled into the nearby woods, but Centralia police and Marion County deputies apprehended him a few minutes later and he was taken to the Marion County Jail.

Atchison says a shotgun was found inside the van that was later found to be stolen in Mt. Vernon from someone who had borrowed it from its Wayne County owner. The van reportedly suffered heavy damage.

The juvenile was arrested for aggravated fleeing with the intent to elude with speeds more than over 21 miles per hour, as well as possession of a firearm by a felon. He was also issued numerous traffic tickets. Atchison notes probation services was contacted in connection with the case.
